The mural was painted in 1982 by Artists Collective, who were 3 artists based in Edinburgh. They were commissioned by the Scottish Development Agency, and at the same time, were also commissioned along with Bob McGilvray and Liz Kemp of the McManus Galleries to write a feesibility study public art in Blackness.
The mural was based on Dundee's history which was a project being carried out by Blackness Primary school next door, so the children had an input into the design process. Artists Collective have been long disbanded, however one of the artists', Paul Grime, was recently commissioned for the new sculpture 'Pathfinder' on Riverside Drive just beyond the Care Commission building.
